Excerpt from a June 2006 story in the Tacoma News Tribune

The USL is celebrating its 20th anniversary this season, and includes a First Division (of which the Seattle Sounders are a member), a Second Division and then PDL, which is primarily for players 23 and younger. That makes it – in effect – the fourth division of U.S. soccer, behind MLS and the two higher USL divisions.

“The quality is excellent,” said Mike Jennings, owner of Tacoma FC. “It’s basically like going to watch a UW game. Some play local, some play in other places in the country, but they come back to have a good summer schedule to keep them sharp as they go back to their other places. … The idea is that we want to attract fans to see a good level of local kids.”

Jennings is as local as his roster. He once coached the University of Puget Sound women’s team, and he has been involved with FC Seattle and FC United.

He also has friends in the USL, and when the Spokane Shadow went out of business just one month before the start of the season, those friends urged Jennings to create a Tacoma team to take its place.

“That’s clearly a pretty short time to pull something together operationally, but I talked with the league and I thought I could pull it off: finding players and getting a stadium, and just getting the thing off the ground,” he said. “It’s really only been about two months. We’ve been playing games about (one month) now, and I had about a month before that to get things going. It’s a good fit for me, and I think it’s a good fit for the area.”

Even in haste, Jennings believes he picked the right stadium: Viking Field at Curtis High School, which he envisions as his team’s long-term home. However, his rush didn’t allow much thought about a team name, so he went with something basic and intends to invite fans to help select a new name and mascot for future seasons.
