SEATTLE
(Mar. 14 2003) - Jeremy Yerkes & Michael Schefter each scored as
Seattle Pacific played the A-League Seattle Sounders to a 2-2 tie at
Shoreline Stadium tonight. Last year the Sounders total wins were the
second best regular season record in A-League history.
The first half saw many good soccer moments as both teams battled tenaciously in the midfield in order to gain control. It was not until the 28th minute that Seattle Pacific was able to break the Sounders opposition. A corner kick sent into the box by Michael Brkich found a unmarked Jeremy Yerkes (2002 GNAC Newcomer of the Year) after a poor defensive clearance, who smashed a low half volley towards goal. The shot was blocked and Yerkes wisely chest-trapped the rebound and volleyed an unstoppbable shot. Yerkes timing was superb as he hit a 20-yard full volley to the upper left corner. Yerkes (So., Gresham, Or.) led the Falcons and was third in the GNAC with nine goals and 24 points this season as a transfer midfielder from Tacoma Community College. He was one of five unanimous first team all-conference picks. It took Michael Schefter (Jr., Yakima, Wa./West Valley) just over 10 minutes to put the Falcons ahead 2-0. At the 47-minute mark, Schefter received a cross swung in from Brent Egbert from the right side, where Schefter found himself two steps ahead of the Sounders defense. Michael's first touch 25 yards out controlled the pass and his shot rolling just beneath the Sounders netminder, allowing the ball to roll untouched into and open net. The Sounders were not ready to give up quite yet. Just a few minutes after the 2-0 lead was established, Seattle Pacific alumni Jason Farrel made it a 2-1 game heading in a set piece 30 yards out from the right side. The ball was well placed in the upper right corner of the net. SPU keeper, James Ward was able to get to the ball, but not enough to clear it out of danger. The final goal of the game came 15 minutes before time expired on a defensive lapse putting James Ward 1 v 1 with the onrushing Sounder.
